Design is not always for the designer. As a designer, it is necessary to be able to develop well designed solutions to challenges the designer has not faced themselves. These well-designed solutions are only possible through one avenue – a thorough and human understanding of the user and their concerns attained through research and empathy.
Der Zwischenraum – “a clock to bridge the space in between”, is an exercise in this design philosophy. Developed for users older than myself and who had recently moved for the first time, this clock effectively and beautifully addresses feelings of homesickness and loneliness commonly experienced when moving.
